William Cleaver

1742–1815 (age 73)

Biography

William Cleaver (1742–1815) was educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, where his scholarship and steady temperament led to a fellowship and, in time, to his election as President of that hall in 1785.

He went on to shepherd dioceses as Bishop of Chester, then Bangor, and finally Carlisle, always emphasizing clear teaching and pastoral care, and he returned to Brasenose in his final years, passing there with the gratitude of both college and church.
