William D. Kelley

Biography

William D. Kelley became one of Pennsylvania’s most vocal voices in the U.S. House, serving from 1861 until his death and earning recognition as a relentless opponent of slavery and a pioneer of civil rights for freedpeople.

He also promoted protective tariffs and fair labor practices, insisting that the prosperity of industrial towns like his own be shared with workers, and his commitments are commemorated at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
