Biography

William Edward Story devoted his life to bridging the rigorous traditions of European mathematics with the emerging American scholarly community; his early training prepared him to help shape the departments at Johns Hopkins and later at Clark University, where he encouraged research in analysis, algebra, and the developing field of topology.

Story remained a guiding presence for generations of students, stressing clear thinking, collegiality, and the value of public scholarship, and he is laid to rest in Beverly Central Cemetery.
