William Ellis

Biography

William Ellis was among the early photographers who explored calotype and other emerging techniques to capture likenesses and scenes for the public. He devoted his lens to illustrating charitable works, institutions, and everyday Londoners, believing that an honest portrait could deepen sympathy for those in need.

He balanced technical skill with a kindly curiosity, often sharing his prints with local societies to raise funds for schools and hospitals, and he now rests at Abney Park Cemetery, where the care he showed toward society is still remembered in the quiet paths of the grounds.
