Biography

William Gates LeDuc, born in 1823, rose from rural roots to become a prominent public servant, including a period as United States Commissioner of Agriculture, where he championed scientific farming practices and the exchange of knowledge between producers. He also served in the Minnesota territorial government and later supported rail expansion, always striving to connect farmers with new markets without losing sight of small-town values.

In retirement he returned to Lakeside Cemetery’s neighborhood with gratitude for the friendships that sustained him, and his long life left behind a legacy of civic leadership tempered by simple hospitality.
