Biography
William H. C. Whiting was a graduate of West Point who brought his engineering skill and steady temperament to the Confederate army, serving with distinction in several theaters before becoming chief engineer of the Coastal Department.
Even in the closing weeks of the Civil War he sought to care for the men under his command, and after a final illness he passed in 1865; Oakdale Cemetery marks the place where comrades and family laid him to rest.
