Biography

William Henry Fox Talbot stands among the architects of modern photography, bridging his work as a scientist and artist to develop the calotype process that captured the world with a new clarity. His tireless experimentation and correspondence with fellow thinkers turned the quiet rooms of Lacock into a laboratory for light, and his publications helped bring the invention of photography into wider practice.

Even after the initial excitement, Talbot remained devoted to the study of optics and the preservation of ancient manuscripts, providing generous support to students and to the community that surrounded his estate.
