William Henry Furness

Biography

William Henry Furness (1802–1896) was a clergyman and abolitionist whose ministry at First Unitarian Church touched countless lives, and he is memorialized at Laurel Hill Cemetery. He used both pulpit and pen to advocate for human dignity and to challenge the injustices of slavery.

Furness’s sermons, essays, and pastoral care inspired generations to pursue justice and mercy, making him a guiding light in the spiritual and social life of his time.
