Biography

William Howe, 5th Viscount Howe (1729–1814), was a seasoned commander whose victories in the Seven Years’ War made him one of Britain’s most respected generals and ultimately brought him to the command of British armies in America during the Revolution.

He sought conciliation with the colonists, strove for restraint in a bitter conflict, and spent his final years in Twickenham, where he reflected on his service and the hopes for peace that he had cherished.
