Biography

William Hull answered the Revolutionary call, serving as a brigadier general in the Continental Army and later as governor of the Michigan Territory, where he sought to balance frontier hopes with federal authority. His career continued into the War of 1812 when, as a major general, he confronted daunting challenges along the Canadian border.

Though his surrender of Detroit brought criticism, he remained a committed public servant, spending his final years near the East Parish Burying Ground in Portland, writing on military reform and supporting local charities until he died in 1825.
