William John Johnston was a devoted pillar of his Connecticut town, combining a sharp business mind with a generous hand in supporting schools, churches, and the civic organizations that knit his neighbors together.

He carried that sense of duty to the end of his days, encouraging younger generations to serve their fellow citizens, and he is buried in Putnam Cemetery.
