Biography
William R. Lawley, Jr. was a United States Army Air Forces pilot whose courage under fire earned him the Medal of Honor during World War II, after he refused to abandon his crippled B-17 and its crew even as the odds grew desperate. His ability to keep calm, to inspire loyalty in those around him, and to think clearly amid chaos became the stuff of legend among veterans.
After the war, he remained committed to sharing the lessons of service, encouraging younger aviators, and honoring fellow heroes through his involvement in veterans’ organizations. He is laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery, a place where visitors pause to remember his bravery and enduring humility.
