Biography

William Shipley (1714-1803) earned recognition as a painter and as a passionate advocate for the practical arts, founding the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce to promote invention and skill.

He labored to give artists and craftsmen a platform for recognition, and his memory is fondly recalled at All Saints Church in Maidstone.
