William Theophilus Dortch, born in 1824, built a reputation as a careful lawyer and legislator whose judicious temper helped guide North Carolina through sectional tensions and the difficult years that followed.

He cherished the friendships of townsfolk and the steady routines of civic life, continuing to offer counsel long after the most urgent political storms had passed, and he rests in Willow Dale Cemetery.
