Biography
William Upham, born in 1792 in Vermont, fought in the War of 1812 and returned home to practice law while tending to the affairs of fellow veterans and state government.
Elected to the Senate in 1843, he spent a decade advocating for moderation in financial matters, for preparedness, and for the national postal service, giving Vermont a voice of calm until his death in 1853.
