Biography

William W. Grout, a Vermonter who rose from humble beginnings to command the 10th Vermont Infantry during the Civil War, later turned his leadership to Congress, where he represented his state in the House across two eras and worked tirelessly for veterans and fiscal discipline.

He remained devoted to the rhythms of Vermont life after each term, proving equally steady in consultation with neighbors and in supporting the institutions that sustained the Grove Cemetery community.
