Biography

William W. Mackall, born in 1817, served for decades as an officer, first in the United States Army and later in the Confederate forces, where he commanded with deliberation and was known for his concern for the soldiers under his care. His training at West Point and his sense of duty led him through campaigns marked by courage and a desire to protect his men.

Returning to civilian life, he spent his final years in Virginia and passed in 1891; he lies in Fairfax County, where many recall his unwavering devotion to duty and the measured wisdom he offered in times of trial.
