Witold Gombrowicz
1904–1969 (age 65)
Biography
Witold Gombrowicz, the Polish writer whose novels and essays questioned the nature of identity, spent his life daring readers to look beyond surface manners and to embrace the absurdities of human existence.
After years abroad he settled in the Alpes-Maritimes, where the calm of the Riviera contrasted with the sharpness of his prose, and even now his spirited works continue to challenge and inspire.
