Biography

Katherine Smithis, born in 1791, devoted herself to philanthropy and the quiet work of easing the lives of those around her in London. She was known to assist in establishing Sunday schools, supporting mothers and children, and encouraging temperance societies so that families might find steadier footing.

Her calm leadership inspired other women to offer time and resources, and her belief that every neighbour deserved thoughtful care left an imprint on numerous benevolent societies. She was laid to rest in Abney Park Cemetery, where friends could visit the place that now holds her memory.
