Aaron Ernest Vanderpoel came of age during the closing years of the Civil War and balanced work with devotion to the neighbors who relied on his steady hand.

When he died in 1898 his friends remembered his generosity and committed him to Woodlawn Cemetery as a testament to a life lived in quiet service.
