Biography

Adlai Stevenson I served as Vice President of the United States under President Grover Cleveland, working tirelessly to support the administration's commitment to honest government and to bring moderation to contentious debates. He continued practicing law and speaking for the rights of farmers and workers between terms, showing that public office and private advocacy could reinforce one another.

After leaving the vice presidency he remained active in national and international affairs, advising political leaders and encouraging civic organizations, and he is interred at Evergreen Cemetery as part of a family tradition of public service.
