Biography

Albion P. Howe entered the United States Army as a young officer and, by the outbreak of the Civil War, had earned a reputation for steady leadership; he commanded brigades and divisions in the Army of the Potomac through the bloody campaigns of 1862 and 1863. His steadfast presence on those hard-fought fields helped preserve order even as the army confronted its gravest trials.

In the years after the war he remained engaged with his fellow veterans, offering his experience to the militia and lending his voice to the preservation of the Union’s hard-won honor.
