Biography
Alexander Lawton (1818-1896) gained respect for his leadership as an officer during the Civil War and for the composure with which he guided others through turbulent times. After the conflict he redirected his energies toward reconciliation and the civic life of Savannah, always aiming to rebuild trust across divided communities.
In his later years he was treasured for the quiet strength and counsel he offered, and for the ways he encouraged mutual understanding. Alexander rests at Bonaventure Cemetery, his contributions commemorated by those who value peace and public service.
