Biography

Alexander Skene (1837–1900) achieved distinction as a physician whose careful scholarship and practice advanced the understanding of women’s health at a pivotal time in medical history. He described the paraurethral glands that now bear his name and worked to elevate standards of care for women, teaching younger physicians to combine compassion with scientific rigor.

Although he now lies in Rockland Cemetery, the discipline he brought to medicine and the respect he offered his patients continue to inspire practitioners who follow in his footsteps.
