Biography

Alexander Thomas Augusta broke barriers as one of the first African American physicians to serve the United States Army, bringing medical care to soldiers in the Civil War and advocating for better treatment for Black servicemen. His courage in the face of prejudice and his unwavering professionalism made him a pioneer in military medicine.

After the war, he continued to teach and practice, contributing to the advancement of medical education for people of color. Arlington National Cemetery honors Dr. Augusta as both a healer and a trailblazer whose life exemplified the highest ideals of service.
