Biography

Alexander Winton, born 1860, came to Cleveland as an immigrant engineer and soon built the Winton Motor Carriage Company, which manufactured some of the nation's earliest automobiles and tested them in pioneering races. He demonstrated that American industry could build reliable passenger cars and that Cleveland could be a center of experimental engineering.

Later he retired from manufacturing but remained active in civic circles, supporting education and scientific clubs, and he enjoyed watching the next generation of automakers grow. Lake View Cemetery holds his remains as a tribute to the ingenuity that he brought to a new industry.
