Biography

Arnold Elzey’s military career spanned the Spanish–American War era of the antebellum United States into the turbulence of the Civil War, where he served with both the U.S. Army and later as a Confederate general. His leadership in several engagements reflected a steady approach, even as the nation fractured around him.

After the conflict he returned to Maryland, living quietly while reflecting on the causes he once fought for, and he died in the city that shaped his early years. He is buried in Green Mount Cemetery alongside others who shared in the era’s complex history.
