Biography

Augustus Peabody Gardner built a reputation in Massachusetts as a thoughtful reformer, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1902 until the First World War when he answered the call to military service. His advocacy for preparedness and veterans' issues reflected a lifelong readiness to place public duty above personal comfort.

He resigned his seat to accept a commission in the Army, training troops for overseas deployment, and remained on active duty until his untimely death in 1918, leaving behind a record of civic leadership and sacrifice.
