Biography

Benjamin Edes of Boston, born in 1732, was the printer and co-publisher of the Boston Gazette, a newspaper that became a leading voice for liberty during the turbulent years before the Revolution. Through bold editorials and sharp reporting, Edes amplified the arguments of the Sons of Liberty and kept the public engaged with the cause of independence.

Despite facing British censorship and the risks of radical publishing, he stood firm in defense of free expression, helping to lay the groundwork for the press’s role in sustaining a democratic society.
