Biography

Charles Albert Tindley, a Methodist minister in Philadelphia, drew on his faith and musical gifts to compose stirring gospel hymns that blended Scripture with the everyday struggles and hopes of African Americans in the early twentieth century.

His compositions, including the work that became the anthem “I’ll Overcome Someday,” inspired congregations far beyond his own church and helped lay the foundation for gospel music as a vital American genre.
