Biography

Charles Bechon (1732–1812) was an illuminator whose artistic skills contributed to the visual and decorative arts during the 18th century. His work in illumination—the art of embellishing manuscripts and documents with decorative designs and gold leaf—represented a continuation of a venerable artistic tradition during an era of transition in artistic practice.

Bechon's career spanned the latter part of the 18th century and early years of the 19th, a period when traditional illumination arts were gradually being superseded by new printing technologies.
