Charles D. Sherwood, born in 1833, engaged in storekeeping and local affairs, always ready to offer credit to families in need and counsel to young men beginning apprenticeships. He appreciated the simple pleasures of life, from neighborhood picnics to hosting reading circles that promoted discussion and camaraderie.
In addition to his business pursuits, Charles contributed to the care of the town’s streets and schools, believing that small improvements yielded lasting benefits. Those who knew him recall his steady temper and generous outlook, and he rests peacefully at Mound Grove Cemetery.
