Biography
Charles Francis Richter, a seismologist at Caltech, codified earthquake strength through the Richter scale while collaborating with Beno Gutenberg, and his precise measurements brought a new language to the forces that shaped the American West.
He strove to educate the public about seismic hazards and to improve instrumentation, leaving behind not only data but a commitment to safety, and his memory rests at Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum.
