Biography

Charles Hamilton Houston was a towering civil rights lawyer whose legal strategies laid the foundation for dismantling segregation, especially through his leadership at Howard University School of Law and his work in landmark NAACP cases.

He mentored Thurgood Marshall and others, shaping the legal team that would achieve Brown v. Board of Education, and he remains honored for his tireless commitment to justice; he is buried at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.
