Charles S. Wainwright

1826–1907 (age 81)

Biography

Charles S. Wainwright spent the Civil War as quartermaster of the Union V Corps, keeping his men fed, clothed, and ready even as campaigns pressed him into difficult terrain and logistics.

He left behind richly detailed diaries that preserve the voices of the enlisted men he supported, and Green-Wood Cemetery now holds the remains of the officer whose precise work kept the Union armies on the move.
