Biography

Christian Herter, born in 1839, was an artist and designer renowned for bringing refined beauty to American interiors during a transformative period in the nation’s aesthetic life. Through his craftsmanship and attention to detail, he helped define the Herter Brothers studio as a standard-bearer for bespoke furnishings and tasteful domestic surroundings.

Herter died in 1883 and was laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery, where admirers remember his elegant approach to design and the quiet dignity he brought to every commission.
