Biography
Daniel Lothrop, born in 1831, founded D. Lothrop Company and became a leading publisher of wholesome literature for children and families, bringing authors such as Mary Mapes Dodge to a national audience. He believed that books could instill virtue and imagination, and he dedicated his career to making worthy stories available to every household.
He also wrote his own works, supported libraries, and encouraged literary clubs; when he died in 1892 readers and colleagues alike mourned a man whose industriousness and warm spirit helped define American family reading, and he rests at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
