Owen Johns

Owen Johns (d. 1884) was a prominent New York City merchant whose business ventures helped transform retail commerce in America. He operated dry goods palaces in Manhattan—expansive emporiums that were the direct precursors to the modern department store.

Johns's commercial enterprises were instrumental in establishing new models of retail trade that would define urban shopping for generations to come, making him an important figure in the development of American commerce during the nineteenth century.
