Daniel Manning parlayed his experience in banking and journalism into a political career that brought him to the inner circle of President Grover Cleveland, who appointed him as Postmaster General in 1885. Manning presided over a large federal department, improving management, reducing waste, and seeking fair treatment for postal employees while keeping a close eye on the nation's fiscal health.
