David P. Lewis

Biography

David P. Lewis (1820–1884) guided Alabama through the early years of Reconstruction as governor, promoting reconciliation while working to rebuild education and infrastructure across the state, and he later served in Congress with a commitment to civil order and economic stability. His leadership carried the tone of reasoned patience, encouraging cooperation among lawmakers of different backgrounds.

He rests in Maple Hill Cemetery, where his dedication to healing Alabama’s wounds is still spoken of with gratitude.
