Biography

William Holding Echols (1834-1909) was a mathematician whose leadership at the University of Virginia helped shape the institution’s devotion to rigorous learning; as an educator and chancellor he guided students and faculty through periods of growth.

His influence is remembered by pupils and by Maple Hill Cemetery, which now marks his final rest in honor of a scholar who devoted his days to the advancement of knowledge.
