Biography

Demetrius (1865-1937) was an Orthodox deacon who served his faith community with dedication and spiritual commitment. Throughout his long ministry, he witnessed the dramatic changes in Russian religious life, from the established Church of the Imperial era to the persecuted faith communities of the Soviet period.

Demetrius was executed at the Butovo firing range in 1937 as part of Stalin's systematic persecution of Orthodox clergy. His martyrdom stands as testimony to the faith and courage of those who refused to abandon their religious calling despite state-sponsored violence.
