Biography

DuBose Heyward drew on the rich culture of Charleston to create poignant stories of African-American life, his 1925 novel Porgy weaving compassion with keen social observation.

He later joined forces with George and Ira Gershwin to adapt the tale into the enduring opera Porgy and Bess, leaving a legacy of artistry that continues to inspire performers and audiences.
