E. T. Whittaker
1873–1956 (age 83)
Biography
Sir Edmund Taylor Whittaker was an astronomer and mathematician whose career bridged the strict precision of Cambridge lectures and the wider wonders of the night sky. His textbooks and monographs, along with his leadership of the Royal Society’s Mathematical Tables Committee, helped generations of students in Britain and abroad grasp both celestial mechanics and rigorous analysis.
He served as the Savilian Professor of Geometry and was deeply involved in promoting mathematical scholarship, while remaining a beloved figure in the Mount Vernon community where he is now laid to rest.
