Biography

Edward McKnight Kauffer was a pioneering graphic designer whose modernist vision reshaped advertising and poster art during the first half of the 20th century. After studying and working in London, he produced iconic images for the London Underground, Shell Oil, and other institutions that combined bold color, typography, and abstract forms to communicate with clarity and elegance.

Returning to the United States in the 1930s, Kauffer continued to influence the visual landscape through magazine covers, book jackets, and exhibition designs, while mentoring younger artists in New York. He was laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of innovation that still inspires designers today.
