Biography

Edward P. Doherty, born in 1838, served as a Union cavalry officer whose calm leadership in the 16th New York Cavalry earned him the responsibility of leading the detachment that tracked and captured John Wilkes Booth in 1865.

He continued in uniform to help safeguard the capital, and his grave at Arlington National Cemetery marks both his wartime achievement and years of subsequent duty to the nation.
