Biography

Edward Patrick Allen became bishop of Mobile in 1897 and over the next three decades guided the diocese through growth, building schools, hospitals, and other institutions that reflected his pastoral concern.

He was noted for his calm leadership during storms and epidemics, for encouraging outreach to the poor, and for inviting priests and laypeople alike into his vision of a vibrant church; he now rests at Cave Hill Cemetery.
