Biography

Oscar Hugh Lipscomb, the first archbishop of Mobile, guided the Archdiocese from 1980 to 2008, expanding Catholic schools, youth programs, and the Church’s outreach to the city’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. His steady leadership helped the archdiocese navigate moments of change while deepening interfaith dialogue and encouraging lay participation in parish life.

Even after his retirement, Archbishop Lipscomb remained a beloved presence at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, offering wise counsel to priests, supporting clergy retreats, and reminding the faithful that the Eucharist and works of mercy are at the heart of the Christian life.
