Edward Preble
1761–1807 (age 46)
Naval Officer
Biography
Edward Preble distinguished himself as a naval officer, commanding the Mediterranean Squadron and leading the blockade of Tripoli during the First Barbary War, where his daring raids and discipline brought renewed respect for the fledgling U.S. Navy. His leadership established standards that later captains emulated and earned him lasting praise at home.
He died in 1807 and was laid to rest in Eastern Cemetery, but the sailors he trained, including Stephen Decatur, carried forward his emphasis on readiness and honor as they protected American commerce around the world.
