Biography

Eleanor Boyle Ewing Sherman (1824–1888) grew up in Ohio’s prominent Ewing family and married General William Tecumseh Sherman, becoming his closest confidante during many years of military command. A devout Catholic and unflappable hostess, she welcomed soldiers and relatives alike, offering comfort when war-time separations threatened to overwhelm them.

After the war she tended to family life with the same calm steadiness, stewarding charitable efforts and keeping alive the bonds of service that guided her husband’s life; she rests now with her family at Calvary Cemetery.
